From the poetry journal of Micah Gray

I’m not the hero you need.

I’m clumsy on my feet

And my sword clatters to the ground.

But I’m the hero you got.

Unprepared, often scared,

And held together by determination.

Chapter 7

After I came home from work and had dinner with Gram, I went out to the mailbox at the end of the gravel driveway. The USB drive was sitting on top of a sheet of coupons and an electric bill. I pulled everything out of the box and pocketed the drive. Within the stack of mail was a notice from The Tuckske County Sheriff’s Department. It read:

Notice to all residents of Sapphire Lake:

Officers will be conducting an

investigation of the lake

and its surrounding areas

the morning of July 15.

For your safety, please be advised

that no persons or water vessels

are permitted on the lake

from 5 A.M. to 8 A.M.

Officers will be posted

at the local Marina to prevent

access to the lake.

Disregarding this notice

may result in fines.

Thank you for your cooperation.

I walked back into the house and went to the kitchen. Gram was loading plates in the dishwasher.

“Did Benji drop off the USB drive?” Gram asked.

“He did. I came in to say goodnight. I have to practice breaking Dani’s vision,” I said, laying the mail down on the kitchen table. I grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge.

“Do you want me to walk you through the process again?”

I bit my lip. “Benji asked me not to involve you anymore. He doesn’t want you to see or hear classified information. He’s scared to even share the information with me. I was going to keep trying on my own.”

“There’s no reason I can’t be around to help. Don’t show me pictures and don’t tell me any new information. I want to make sure you’re okay.”

“I’ll be able to handle this on my own, Gram,” I insisted.

“Don’t be so stubborn, Micah. Breaking visions is difficult and painful, and you know that now. Let me stick around while you’re still learning.”

I sighed. “Okay, let’s work in my room this time.”

When all of the plates and utensils had been loaded into the washer, Gram and I went upstairs. While she went to her room to change into pajamas, I retrieved my laptop from the dresser. I sat down on my bed, turned the computer on, and plugged in the USB drive. There was only one file on the drive, labeled “CONFIDENTIAL.” I opened it and saw the thumbnail pictures. There was a picture of Allison, the one Benji had showed me before, but there were several of Dani. My fingers froze in place. They were minuscule squares on the screen, so I couldn’t see any details, but a vivid memory of Dani’s body lying on the beach came back to me. It felt as though my throat was closing. As I tried to catch my breath, Gram walked into the room. She had taken her hair out of its braid and her white locks were wavy. She sat down on the bed with me and reached for my hand.
